More Cerveza For Me & My Friends!

Beer is living proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.
-- Benjamin Franklin
Cerveza -When you think of the Caribbean several images come to mind. Palm trees, beaches, beautiful turquoise water and of course rum. Beer is one of the last things you think of , and up until the 1930’s there was a reason. All Cerveza was
imported prior to 1929 with most of it coming from Germany and lesser amounts coming from the USA. In 1935 President Especial was first produced by the Dominican National Brewery. It wasn’t until 1950 that beer surpassed rum in consumption.
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
-- Henny Youngman
Bohemia Brewery was started in 1983 when Miller Brewing Co. and E. Leon Jimenes. C por A. teamed up and started brewing Bohemia beer. A third major player was introduced in 1996 and that was a red beer called Soberana. Ambar is a dark lager that was not introduced until 2002, so it is still distributed on a limited bases.
In the 1980’s there was huge spike in both rum and beer consumption. Ironically that is about the same time that the puntacana-vacation crew began making regular ventures to the
Caribbean. I have come to the conclusion that “the crew” is good for the economy of the Caribbean but not much else.

My high school teacher said that drinking makes you stupid, I know that's not true, I was stupid long before I took my first drink!

When visiting the resorts around Punta Cana the beer that you most likely will be served is Presidente or Presidente Light. Some resorts will serve Bohemia beer or Soberana. Presidente is distributed Nationally and can be found in almost every shop that serves beer outside of the resorts. It is very likely that Presidente accounts for over 90% of all Cerveza sales in the Dominican Republic. We have found that when we went out side the resorts and ordered a beer they did not ask us what kind of beer we wanted, they just came back with Presidente.

There can't be good living where there is not good drinking.
-- Benjamin Franklin
As a tourist when you leave the resort you will find that the price of beer is less than what you would pay in larger U.S. and European cities but is still more than the locals pay. That’s OK, we still get a good deal and the locals make a little extra money, after all we are in their country and enjoying their beaches.
Most of the beer that you will find in the Dominican Republic is stronger than U.S. beer. It tends to be closer to the alcohol content of European beer which is between the range of 5 to 6%. You can find these Dominican Brands in the U.S. but it is not exactly the same formula as you will get in the Dominican Republic.

To alcohol, the cause of and solution to, all life's problems.
