Punta Cana Airport

Some vistors do not like this Airport but I love it. It may not be state of art but to me it says Caribbean. Complete with live Caribbean music and grass roof. You will find that many travelers do not like change and thus don't think this airport is sofisticated enough. But isn't that the point of traveling, to experience new and different things?

We have included a flight tracker for the Punta Cana Airport to help you with your travels. Please note that you will be taken to Flight Stats website. Just simply close the Flight Stats window on your browser when you are finished. If you notice, you have 3 options at the top of "Flight Status" 1) By Flight 2) By Airport 3) By Route. If you know your flight...Great. If you would like to see all Departures or Arrivals then simply click the "By Airport" tab at the top. At the next window choose which one you would like to see. The code for Punta Cana Airport is "PUJ" just in case you don't know.

The Punta Cana airport has more passengers going through it's gates than any other airport in the Dominican Republic. The number of flights are increasing between 10% and 20% per year. After talking with some of the airport managers we have found that there are plans to expand the international terminal, build a new, longer runway and modify taxiways and even plans for a new tower. It must be approved however, by the Dominican Republic Government. The current Punta Cana Airport has two terminals: Terminal 1 is the terminal for international flights while Terminal 2 is for domestic travel within the Dominican Republic. The privately owned commercial airport is small and easy to navigate upon arrival and baggage claim is close at hand. We will walk you through what to expect upon arrival in this tropical airport.

As you can see in the top photo, the Punta Cana Airport does not have ramps connecting to the terminal but not to worry, it is a short nice walk to the immigration area. The most striking part of stepping off of the plane is unmistakable palm leaf roof on the Terminal. As you enter the airport you will be asked to take a picture with two beutiful local Dominicans that you can purchase upon your departure.

At the Punta Cana Airport you will be required to buy a Tourist card for $10 before proceeding to the immigration officer. The immigration officer will need your passport and the immigration form that should have been given to you on your inbound flight. If you did not receive this form don't panic, they have plenty that you can fill out on your arrival. After clearing customs you will usually pass a band playing Caribbean music with a hat on the floor hoping you will drop a dollar in it. As you exit the Airport you will be swarmed with people wanting to take your bags. I have found that if you just go with the flow you will be fine and they can use the small tip. Let them know what agency you booked with and they will take your bags to kiosk. As with any vacation do not leave your bags unattended, follow the porter to the kiosk. Once in the parking lot don't be surprised if you have to wait between 15 to 45 minutes. The drive is another 20 to 40 minutes which allows you to see some of the life style in the Dominican Republic.

Airport transportation is mostly vans and when you depart a food court is available. There is also a small bar just in case you did not get enough liquer at your all inclusive resort. Like all airports don't check valuables and watch them at hand searches. I had a ring taken by a customs agent; my wife and couldn't figure out why he was so interested in my side pocket of the carry on. He never checked any other luggage... just told us to get moving after he was done with the carry on. It wasn't until I was rolling down the runway that I figured it out. I had been to the beach for one last look while we were waiting on trasportation. I decided to take my ring off and put it in the bag. I told my wife and sure enough when she checked the side pocket it was gone.
